This article explains two-factor authentication (also known as 2FA, or multi-factor authentication or MFA), and how it is used in HSE Schools.
\uD83D\uDCD8 What is it?
Two-factor authentication is a means of verifying account login attempts. While it is always advisable to have a strong password, having a second requirement for logging into an account is safer and more secure.
The second part of two-factor authentication can take many forms, but in HSE Schools the two predominant forms are:
Text (or SMS)-based codes
Authenticator apps on mobile devices
\uD83D\uDCD8 Why does this matter?
HSE Schools requires two-factor authentication to be used whenever accessing an account while NOT in an HSE school building and connected to our internet. You will NOT need to use two-factor authentication while connected to internet in an HSE building.
Note that the actual connection to HSE internet is what determines whether or not a code is required. A cell phone used within an HSE building will still require a code, for example, as long as it is still only connected via a cellular network.
\uD83D\uDCD8 How do I set it up?
You MUST set up two-factor authentication for the first time while in an HSE building and connected to HSE internet. It is not possible, for security reasons, to configure two-factor authentication while offsite.
You will be prompted to set up two-factor authentication the first time you attempt to log in to any new HSE account. You will be asked to choose which method you prefer.
Follow the prompts to set up text (or SMS-based) code verification, entering your phone number and entering the test code that you receive.
For authenticator app verification, you will download the app of your choosing (Microsoft typically refers to there own app for such purposes). Then, follow the prompts to either scan a QR code or enter a test numeric code that the app generates. For more information on using Microsoft’s Authenticator app, please click here.
\uD83D\uDCD8 How does it work?
The following steps apply AFTER initial setup of a method to receive codes.
After logging into an HSE account successfully using only your password initially, you will be asked to verify your account with a numeric code.
Consult your mobile device to retrieve the code, and enter it when requested.
